Cub Scout Pack 171 - Pittsford, NY

Welcome to Pack 171's website.  We hope you and your family are here and ready to join...

Most parents choose a Cub Scout Pack based on where their kid's friends and activities already are. Pack 171's scouts come primarily from Jefferson Road & Allen Creek Elementary Schools in Pittsford, but we accept scouts from all communities in the greater Rochester, NY area.

On this site you can learn more about Pack 171 and our current and future activities.

Let's Get Ready to Race!

Posted on Jan 23 2024 - 8:44pm

This weekend is the Pack 171 annual Pinewood Derby!

Reminder that we recommend checking in your cars at JRE on Friday evening. (6:30pm - 7:30pm).  That gives Scouts a chance to check their car for compliance with the official rules / specs (and an evening to address any last minute issues).  The Pack will have a "Pit Row" set up with extra weights and a few tools to help Scouts make minor adjustments.

On Saturday, we'll take additional car check-ins from 11am-noon as well as provide pizza (and plates).  Please bring your own (reusable) water bottle and maybe a snack for the mid-afternoon.  Races will kick off at noon, starting with Lions and then proceeding by ranks.

Looking for (more) Pack 171 apparel and gear?

The BSA ScoutShop is now offering apparel and gear customized with your local unit!  Check out the choices for Pack 171 gear!

Happy New Year!

Hope that everyone is having a wonderful start to the new year.

The Pinewood Derby is coming up in just two weeks.  The calendar event has been updated with all of the details.

A Great Service Project

Posted on Dec 12 2023 - 9:10pm

We had a tremendous turn out for our December Service project.  The Scouts worked hard and made a bunch of snow-themed gifts to brighten up the rooms of senior citizens in our community.

A huge THANK YOU to Stacey Philbrick-Yadav for organizing the event and to all of the parent volunteers that helped with supplies and manning a craft station.

Get Ready for the Pinewood Derby

Race day will be Saturday January 27!  Save the date!

We'll add more details to the calendar entry in the coming weeks, but here are the essentials:

  • There are official rules / specs that limit dimensions and weight; the most important are that a car must not exceed 5oz, 7in in length, 5in in height (in order to fit under our finish line), and must have a 3/8in bottom clearance (in order to run on our track).
    • Seneca Waterways Council has not yet released their 2024 PWD Rules, but we expect them to essentially the same as their 2023 PWD Rules.
  • We race and award by rank (Lions, Tigers, ...); in addition, we have a "Siblings Class" (following official rules) and an "Outlaw Class" (with a 12oz maximum weight).
    • Scouts should complete a regulation car for their rank race before starting on a second "Outlaw Class" car.
  • We also hold a variety of Style contests, voted on by participants on race day.
  • The Pack provides each Scout with one Pinewood Derby kit.  Additional kits may be purchased for $7 for siblings or for "Outlaw" cars (submitted by Scouts, siblings, or parents).

If you weren't able to pick up your PWD kit at the Service Project night, stop by 11 High Hill Drive, Pittsford, and take one from the box on the front porch.  If you are purchasing an extra kit, please just leave $7 per extra kit or pay online via PayPal.

Our Scouting neighbors are once again generously hosting Pinewood Derby workshops at the Rush United Methodist Church.  Those who were able to attend the last couple of years will remember that they have a wonderful workshop with very knowledgeable and skillful volunteers.  Pack 171 will have a workshop evening with them sometime in early January.
